Understanding Dental Phobia & Dental Anxiety

Dental phobia is more than just feeling nervous - it's an intense fear that can prevent you from seeking essential dental treatment. Common causes of dental anxiety include:

  • Previous traumatic dental experiences.

  • Fear of pain or needles.

  • Feeling vulnerable or out of control.

  • Embarrassment about the condition of your teeth.

  • Fear of judgement from dental professionals.

  • Sensitivity to sounds, smells, or touch while in the dental chair.

If any of these resonate with you, know that our dental practices in Hertford and Ware are judgement-free zones where your comfort and wellbeing are our priority.

FAQs

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEDATION DENTISTRY

WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help nervous patients relax during dental treatment. You remain conscious but deeply calm, with little awareness or memory of the procedure.

WILL I BE COMPLETELY ASLEEP DURING IV SEDATION?

No - you'll be awake but extremely relaxed. Most patients describe it as feeling like they're drifting in and out of sleep. You'll be able to respond to your dentist but will remember little afterwards.

WHO CAN HAVE IV SEDATION?

Most adults in good general health can have IV sedation for dental anxiety. However, it may not be suitable if you're pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or take specific medications. We'll assess your suitability during your consultation.

DO I NEED SOMEONE TO ACCOMPANY ME?

Yes, absolutely. IV sedation makes you drowsy and impairs your judgement for several hours. A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment, wait during treatment, take you home, and stay with you while the sedative wears off.

CAN I HAVE MULTIPLE TREATMENTS UNDER SEDATION?

Yes. One of the benefits of IV sedation is that we can often complete multiple procedures in a single visit, minimising the number of appointments you need.

HOW MUCH DOES SEDATION DENTISTRY COST?

Costs vary depending on the length and complexity of treatment. IV sedation costs £350 per hour, in addition to your dental treatment fees. We'll provide a detailed quote at your consultation.
