IMPLANT DENTISTRY

Implants for dentures

Implants can set you free from discomfort and embarrassment, while keeping the convenience of dentures.

One of the main issues with dentures is that they can become loose over time, resulting in discomfort, embarrassment and difficulty chewing. And while dentures can be refitted, denture wearers can continue to struggle with looseness. This is because, without tooth roots, jawbones start to recede.

However, by placing a few strategic implants into the jawbone, we can lock dentures firmly in place. This process is suitable for people who use either full or partial dentures.

Using implants also removes the need for a denture to cover your palate. This prevents issues with speech and taste, restoring your confidence and enjoyment of a range of foods.

The process of placing implants is straightforward and virtually painless, with a short recovery time, while the benefits are significant.

Who is suitable for this treatment?

Dental implants are an excellent solution for missing teeth. Not everyone is suitable, but the majority of people are. Each person’s situation is unique, so we will carefully evaluate and discuss suitable options during your first appointment.

Factors like lifestyle choices, medical history, and ongoing treatments can influence the healing process of an implant and affect the health of the gums and bone around it.

You can still make a good candidate for this treatment, even if any of the following apply:

You are aged 70 or older
You have high blood pressure
You suffer from osteoporosis or arthritis
You take prescribed anticoagulant medication
You have well-controlled diabetes
You smoke

Is this treatment right for you?

Implants for dentures combine the best of both implants and dentures. They provide the comfort of dentures with the stability of fixed implants. We recommend this treatment for a range of reasons, including:

You prefer the flexibility of removable dentures, but want the stability of implants
You want a simple solution
You don’t want to go through the process of having a full set of implants fitted
When there is insufficient jawbone available to fit a full set of implants

If you are considering dentures for the first time, or aren’t happy with your conventional dentures, then this could be the perfect solution for you. When you book a complimentary implant consultation with us, we’ll take you through your options in detail, to ensure that you are making the right decision for you and your dental health.

IMPLANTS FOR DENTURES

The procedure

The procedure for implant-retained dentures usually takes a few steps. First off we will check to see if there are any decayed or damaged teeth that need to be extracted. We’ll also see if we need to perform bone grafting to any areas where there has been a loss of jawbone.

Once your jaw is properly prepared, we will place dental implants into your jawbone. Generally, it takes about three to six months for the implants to integrate (fuse) with your jawbone. During this time, you will be able to continue using your current denture.

Once the implants have successfully fused to your jawbone and healed, we will then take impressions of your upper and or lower dental arches and send them to the dental lab so that a technician can create your new custom denture.

We will then securely attach your new custom denture to your implants using a series of press stud-like attachments. These press studs will firmly click and lock your dentures into place, so that they are comfortable and secure, but can be removed for cleaning when needed.

FAQs

LET'S TALK ABOUT IMPLANTS FOR DENTURES

How painful is the procedure?

We will treat the gums with local anaesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain at all when the implants are being fitted. Once this is finished, there may be a small amount of discomfort, but this can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers and should quickly subside.

Will I be able to eat whatever I want?

Once your new dentures have been fitted and are securely in place, you’ll be able to bite into all of your favourite foods with confidence, from crunchy apples to crusty bread.

How easy is it to clean my dentures?

One of the real benefits of having removable dentures is that it is easy to maintain a good level of oral hygiene, as brushing and flossing around implants is simple once the dentures have been removed.

How long will they last?

With good care and routine check-ups, your implants should last for many, many years.
