Gentle Solutions FOR

TEETH GRINDING

Teeth grinding can cause serious damage to the way your teeth look and function

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common problem that affects around 10% of the population. However, many people who suffer from bruxism don’t even know that they do it, as around 80% of teeth grinding and clenching happens at night, while people are asleep. Meanwhile, people who grind their teeth during the day usually do it as an unconscious reaction to stress and anxiety.

Mild cases of bruxism may not require treatment. However, in some people, bruxism can be frequent and severe enough to lead to damaged teeth, jaw disorders, headaches and other problems.

MOFE ABOUT TEETH GRINDING

Causes OF Teeth Grinding

It’s not always clear what causes teeth grinding, but common factors include:

Stress and anxiety
Sleep problems, including snoring and sleep apnoea
Certain medicines, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are used to treat depression
Smoking
Drinking lots of alcohol or caffeine
Recreational drug use

Ways to treat teeth grinding

The two main ways used to treat teeth grinding are mouth guards and mouth splints, which each perform different functions:

Mouth guards are worn at night and help to protect your jaw and teeth while you sleep. They work by putting a barrier between your upper and lower jaws, so that you only grind the plates of the guard, rather than the enamel of your teeth. They are created using high-quality materials and are moulded to fit your mouth comfortably.

Mouth splints are also worn at night, but they are made of harder, thicker materials which helps to separate the upper and lower teeth enough to relax the jaw muscles, as well as protecting teeth from grinding.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR VISIT

The process

When you come in for a consultation, we’ll examine your teeth to see the level of tooth wear, and whether this has definitely been caused by teeth grinding or a combination of factors. Other causes include consuming acidic, fizzy and sugary drinks, along with brushing too hard. We’ll also examine your jaw joints and muscles and ask you about any headaches you might be suffering from.

Once we’ve established that the issue is teeth grinding, we’ll talk you through your options and discuss the right type of guard or splint for you. We’ll then take a detailed mould of your teeth and send it to our dental lab technician to create a tailor-made guard or splint.

FAQs

LET'S TALK ABOUT TEETH GRINDING

How long does it take to get used to a mouth guard or splint?

To begin with, mouth guards and splints can feel a little bulky, but most people find it very comfortable after a few weeks.

How do I look after my mouth guard or splint?

These devices are very easy to look after, and just need to be washed with either cold water and mild soap, or special dissolvable tablets.

How long do I need to wear a mouth guard or splint for?

As mouth guards only lessen the wear and tear caused by tooth grinding, rather than tackling the root cause, most people will need to continue wearing a mouth guard for as long as tooth grinding occurs. However, mouth splints seek to help relax the jaw itself, and usually need to be worn for a minimum of three months to see positive changes.
