Gentle Extractions, Compassionate Care

Tooth extractions

Tooth extractions can free you from pain and prevent further oral health issues.

With regular check-ups and a good oral healthcare routine, it’s usually possible to spot the signs of damage and decay before a tooth needs to be extracted. However, in situations where this is necessary, we ensure that your tooth is removed quickly and painlessly.

Main reasons for tooth extractions

A badly damaged tooth – caused by an accident or trauma – that cannot be saved

Advanced gum disease

An infected tooth that may put your overall health at risk if not treated

Impacted teeth that haven’t yet erupted or fully erupted and are causing you pain (common with wisdom teeth)

Overcrowded teeth, which can cause pain, discomfort and issues with biting

An extraction may also be recommended when the patient is starting orthodontic treatment and there is no room for the teeth to move and realign

The Process

What To Expect During An Extraction

Here at the Hertfordshire Dental Group, we’ll always see you quickly to solve problems and relieve pain as soon as possible.

We’ll start by taking X-rays of your teeth to see how easily the tooth can be extracted. In simple cases, we’ll be able to quickly remove the tooth using local anaesthetic. If the tooth has a more complex root formation, or is in an awkward position, we may conduct a surgical procedure to remove the tooth.

Either way, our team will be here to take care of you, from explaining the process and discussing your options, to carrying out a careful, gentle procedure, and providing you with excellent aftercare.

Replacement teeth

When you have a tooth removed, we usually recommend that the gap is filled (except for cases such as wisdom teeth, where there wasn’t enough room for the tooth to grow properly). By filling the gap, you can avoid a range of problems such as nearby teeth moving or becoming loose, vulnerability to infection and decay, or the loss of jawbone.

There are several different options to help fill gaps in your teeth, including dental implants, bridges and dentures. We’ll take you through the options and help you find the right solution that meets your needs.

FAQs

LET'S TALK ABOUT EXTRACTIONS

Do tooth extractions hurt?

We’ll use local anaesthetic and numbing cream to make sure that it isn’t a painful process. You may experience a small amount of pain, swelling and bleeding over the next couple of days, but this is quite common and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

How can I prevent tooth loss?

Sometimes situations, such as painfully impacted teeth are impossible to avoid, but by sticking to regular brushing and flossing, as well as routine dental-check ups, you’ll be able to keep your teeth healthy and spot issues before they progress to the point of tooth removal.

What aftercare will I need?

After you’ve had an extraction, you should avoid smoking, exercise and eating hard food for the next few days. As part of your treatment, we’ll provide you with advice on how you can help speed up the healing process, and avoid additional discomfort.
